Our Community Need

The Los Angeles County Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® was founded in 1996. Since that time, the Los Angeles County Affiliate has invested over $9.2 million in the form of community grants. In addition offering grants, the Affiliate offers education and information about breast health, screening, early detection, and breast cancer. The Affiliate provides health programs and participates in community, corporate, and faith based education events and programs targeting specific at-risk populations. Furthermore, the Affiliate strongly believes in pursuing a systemic change to improve the lives of people with breast cancer through public policy efforts. The Komen Los Angeles County Affiliate has seven full time employees, many consultants, and many interns. The Affiliate has a thirteen member Board of Directors and over 400 registered volunteers. In Los Angeles alone, approximately 5,000 new cases are diagnosed a year. Of those 5,000, around 280 are patients under the age of 40. Unfortunately, Los Angeles County loses approximately 1,000 patients a year to the disease. The purpose of the biennial Community Profile is to provide an overview of the state of breast cancer in Los Angeles County, to inform program planning and service delivery not only for the Los Angeles County Affiliate, but for the entire Los Angeles County breast health and breast cancer community.
