Survivor of the Month 4
I am a breast cancer survivor. Self detected 10 years ago – I wasn’t aware of the increased risk of breast cancer in African American women. I immediately made and appointment with my doctor and had a biopsy 3 months later. Two days after the biopsy I was diagnosed with infiltrating ductile carcinoma; stage 3 breast cancer. Within three weeks I had a lumpectomy followed by 3 months of chemotherapy and 6 weeks of radiation. My biggest concern was my daughter and the thought of having her be on her own, if I didn’t beat this cancer. While in recovery I researched various treatments including medical and alternative – including massage therapy, acupuncture and nutrition, and weighed all my options. Having friends who have tried both methods for cancer treatment, I had an understanding of the pros and cons of each and decided to embrace a mix of both. Within a year of finding the lump I had successfully beaten breast cancer. The support of my family; my daughter, my sister, my father, my friends and my man and a lot of laughter helped me get through it all. I encourage all women battling cancer to stay strong, know you’re not alone, and cancer is not who you are. You will beat this! It’s also important to know if you’re at risk, know your body and trust your instincts. Since recovery I’ve devoted my time to educate African American communities and all women through awareness and advocacy. I am the Board President of the |
