Latino Cancer Education Conference
Helping Bridge the Resource Gap in the Latino Community On Saturday, November 14, 2009 Komen Los Angeles County partnered with Center of Community Alliance for Research and Education (CCARE) at City of Hope and other cancer organizations in Los Angeles County to host a seminal conference titled: “Increasing Latino Voices in Cancer Research.” Komen’s own Maritza Collins emceed the conference that brought together 85 advocates, researchers, policy makers and funders to City of Hope, in Duarte, CA. The agenda and speakers focused on the impact of cancer on the Latino communities, prevention and treatment advances, barriers to effective community-research collaborations and the facilitators of successful community research partnerships. Senator Alex Padilla was the key note speaker and he underscored the urgency to prevent chronic diseases and improve health outcomes for Latinos by increasing access, advocacy and data. Some of the top Latino cancer advocates and researchers in Southern California that presented at this conference included: Dr. Kimlin Ashing-Giwa, Founder and Director, CCARE at City of Hope and the conference Chair highlighting the inadequacy of policy and data responsive to the needs of the Latino communities in California; Dr. Benjamin Paz presented on breast cancer and new advances in treatment; Dr. America Bracho gave a passionate speech on how to bridge the gap between researchers and the community; Dr. Julio Garcia-Aguilar presented on colon cancer and new advances in treatment and prevention; and Sol Reyes Roberts, RN shared her breast cancer survivorship story. This conference called for survivors, advocates and researchers to join forces to conduct the next set of cancer and health research to respond to the health needs of the 13.2 million Latinos in California.
