Project: Breast Cancer Diagnostic Screening for Women Under 40 Years of Age Provide a breast diagnostic program for uninsured, symptomatic women under age 40. Diagnostic procedures include, dependant on need, 130 diagnostic mammograms, 164 breast ultrasounds, 15 ultrasound guided biopsies, 2 stereotactic biopsies, 2 breast cyst aspirations and 19 pathology procedures. Project: Collaborative Diagnostic Breast Project The project targets women who are ineligible to receive state or federal funding due to age or income. The grant will underwrite medical examinations and clinical screenings for approximately 231 women, as well as, 119 breast ultrasounds, 106 diagnostic mammograms, 21 screening mammograms, 30 fine needle aspirations, 30 needle guided ultrasounds and 8 core biopsies. Project: Take Action to Fight Breast Cancer: It’s Never Too Early Provide breast health education to 3000 community members through culturally and linguistically appropriate workshops, community events and media; increase its screening and diagnostic services, case management and diagnostic procedures to 80 underserved women who are under age 40 with breast symptoms or personal family history. Project: Breast Health Screening, Diagnostic, Treatment and Supportive Services for Under/Un-Insured Women at HPMC Cancer Center Language/ethnic specific breast health screening, diagnostic and supportive services for under/uninsured women; maintenance of on-site breast cancer support groups in English, Thai, Spanish or Korean languages. Project: Diagnostic Services Breast Project for Women Under 40 A full range of breast diagnostic services are provided for uninsured women under the age of 40 who are identified with a breast mass. Approximately 100 diagnostic mammograms, 175 breast ultrasounds, 25 ultrasound guided biopsies and 2 stereotactic biopsies will be performed. Project: Subsidized Care for Breast Imaging/Komen Grant Symptomatic, uninsured women under the age of 40 years will receive the following breast diagnostic services: 15 fine needle aspirations, 12 ultrasound guided cyst aspirations, 12 ultrasound guided needle biopsies, 12 ultrasound guided needle biopsies with fine needle aspiration and imaging, 2 stereotactic breast biopsies, 3 bilateral screening mammograms, 17 bilateral diagnostic mammograms, 10 unilateral diagnostic mammograms and 110 breast ultrasounds. Project: Encore plus Breast Cancer Early Detection and Support Services Program Teo support groups to serve 230 women; the first "Refugio" provides a Spanish speaking support group for those diagnosed with breast cancer and breast cancer survivors; the second "Walking Together" is a bilingual support group for those who have abnormal results but not yet diagnosed. Education presentations will be made to local Samoan, Filipino and Cambodian communities concerning early detection, access to services and provision for transportation, interpretation and other support services. Project: Breast Health Access and Support Program This initiative provides for the following critical services: diagnostic mammography and breast biopsy for 60 uninsured women under the age of 40 who do not qualify for publicly funded programs; exercise classes for 30 women with breast cancer; breast prosthesis and/or specialty bras for patients with no means of paying for these items; support groups in English and Spanish, including complimentary books, CDs, and/or tapes. Project: Breast Cancer Screening Program The program will underwrite breast screening for 160 low-income, uninsured and homeless women under the age of 40; provide diagnostic services and case management for 90 of these women who have positive screening results and for whom the clinic has no other source of funding. Project: Latino Outreach Cancer Programs for Women with Breast Cancer and Their Families Outreach to Latinas that are newly diagnosed with breast cancer; 150 platicas (chats) giving emotional and educational support on a one-to-one basis; 80 bilingual Spanish support group contacts for breast cancer patients and their loved ones; Aliados program for community volunteers to be trained and function as hospital visitors and outreach educators; "Mujeres Unidas en Celebracion" mini-conference for low income Latinas affected by breast cancer, and their families; three (3) educational workshops for breast cancer patients and their families. Project: Spanish Language Breast Cancer Support Groups Presentation and coordination of two (2) Spanish Language Breast Cancer Support Groups with the addition of an Art and Expression Support Group and a Gentle Yoga Group for breast cancer survivors both provided in Spanish. Project: Psychosocial and Educational Support for Women with Breast Cancer The support and education programs include two (2) Newly Diagnosed Breast Cancer Groups, an Ongoing Breast Cancer Support Group, a Lymphedema Support Group, A Family, Friend and Partners Group, a Family Transition Group (bereavement), and an off-site bi-lingual group specifically for Latinas with breast cancer in collaboration with the Harbor/UCLA Medical Center. Project: CHAI Breast Cancer Awareness Project The target population of this interventional project is South Asian women aged 30 years and older who have roots of origin fro India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and the Maldives. The program combines breast health education and referrals to screening services. Project: Keep In Touch Breast health education programs for 600 African American women in South Los Angles designed to use 10 peer health motivators to address, discuss and problem solve issues of potential barriers to seeking screenings and early detection. The program will publish health education materials to support the efforts of the peer educators. Project: Breast Health Education for Nikkei Women The program will provide breast health and healthier lifestyle education to at least 500 Japanese/Japanese American women and refer at least 200 women for breast health screening. This will be done through the development of bilingual flyers, notices and press releases, as well as, educational workshops and outreach activities. Project: Legal Issues Telephone Assistance and Training for Breast Cancer Survivors and Health Care Professionals The program provides breast cancer patients educational and other services, such as, a telephone assistance line and in-depth legal counseling for self advocacy when faced with legal issues related to their diagnosis. Underwriting the delivery of six (6) "Client Seminars" and four (4) "Professional Seminars" the program provides training for cancer patients, their families, and their health providers. Project: Breast Cancer Outreach Program Educate and increase screening rates among African American, Latinas and Asian Pacific Islander women over 40 years of age in the Antelope Valley through education workshops that are linguistically and culturally appropriate to inform women about the importance of breast health screening and access to services. Community health outreach workers/promotoras will be recruited and trained to deliver culturally and linguistically appropriate education in rural and unincorporated areas. The 4th Annual Women’s Spring Tea will recruit professional and community leaders of the targeted women. Project: BECAUSE WE CARE The project will reach 100 Cambodian women over the age of 50 with early breast cancer detection information through two (2) informational meetings, and reach several hundred women through the broadcast of one of the meetings via Cambodian cable television. Provide interpretation services for those under going cancer screening and facilitate a bi-weekly support and survivors’ group, and cancer support hotline to connect newly diagnosed cancer patients with cancer survivors. Project: "Return to Wellness Program" for Women with Breast Cancer The program is a ten (10) week course with two, two hour sessions each week for breast cancer survivors designed to promote post treatment healing, life style changes, weight maintenance/reduction and additional services designed to aid in overall long term health and aid the ability to return to normal life routines. Project: The Breast Health Promotion Campaign Target more than 1,700 low-income, uninsured and underinsured Latina and African American women by focusing on the importance of breast cancer early detection and treatment. Utilizing a culturally competent and integrated approach, the following services will be offered: one-on-one breast health consultations, free community based educational presentations, referral and support services, and coalition building/partnerships. A special "Gift of Love" card will be developed as a reminder of early detection. Project: "Planning to Survive" Through seminars, workshops and individualized case management, underserved African American breast cancer survivors will learn to cope with the physical, emotional and practical aspects of post cancer treatment survival. Project: Thai Women’s Health Project The Project proposes to triage 360 Thai women through the services of a bi-lingual Project Coordinator to increase access and utilization of breast cancer prevention and treatment services among a largely immigrant population of Thai women by coordinating referrals, setting up appointments and providing interpretation. In-depth patient navigation will be provided to 16 women receiving breast cancer treatment. Project: Psychosocial Support, Education & Early Breast/Gynecological Cancer Detection Project or African American Women Educational forums will be utilized to promote early detection and cancer screenings using culturally sensitive interventions for under-served and uninsured African American women. Monthly psychosocial support groups will be offered to African American women who are newly diagnosed with breast cancer. The project will establish a collaborative partnership with several organizations to provide services. Project: Mujeres Ayudando Mujeres The project will train Latinas from the central and western San Fernando Valley areas in women’s health issues who will be ambassadors to the low income and underserved minority women of the community. Working in partnership with four local churches, information and classes will be provided in Spanish, the primary language of the audience, and stress the importance of early detection of breast cancer, link women to "well woman" and mammography screenings, teach breast self-examination and navigate for effective treatment and follow-up. Project: Para Una Vida Saludable/For A Healthy Life, A Woman’s Healthy Lifestyle Program Through a series of Spanish language workshops for low income, uninsured and underinsured Latinas living in the San Fernando Valley, 300 women will participate in food demonstrations, exercise and relaxation techniques and education which promotes positive lifestyle behaviors, including breast health screening and reduction of breast cancer risk. A bilingual Spanish/ English staff, consisting of a registered dietitian, a health educator and a mental health professional, will facilitate the workshops. Project: Women Health Care Clinic Breast Health Access Program A minimum of 48 breast health-focused outreach events, reaching at least 480 women will be provided in both English and Spanish for low-income, medically underserved women residing in the Harbor Area of Los Angles County. The community based education promotes early detection (clinical and self breast examination, mammograms), the identification of cancer risk factors, and mainstreaming access to screening services. Project: An Approach to Breast Cancer Awareness in the Samoan Community The program will provide educational workshops in churches, homes, social and cultural gatherings for 600 Samoan women concerning early detection for breast cancer and assist in navigating 400 Pacific Islander women to breast cancer screenings. Maintain and coordinate monthly support groups for Samoan breast cancer survivors. Project: A Program to Establish an Armenian Breast Cancer Support Group This two hospital collaborative program will provide a monthly bilingual breast cancer support group and educational workshops for Armenian women. Breast Health Facilitators or a "grass roots" team of Armenian speaking women will be trained to speak in the community on topics related to breast health, screenings and risk reduction. A database of health information written in the Armenian language will be developed and integrated into the hospitals’ websites or an independent website. Project: The Malle Project This collaborative effort of five Los Angeles County Chamorro (people indigenous to Guam and the Mariana Islands) groups plans to recruit and train seven (7) community representatives as breast lay health leaders and patient navigators and provide breast cancer support and patient navigation services to 100 Chamorro women and their families. The establishment of a Chamorro Breast Cancer Support Network will promote breast cancer awareness, education and screening and reduce the barriers to care. Project: BESAWAS (Breast Education for South Asian Women and Accessible Screening) The goal is to increase breast health awareness, knowledge, and screening among medically underserved South Asian (Indian, Pakistani, Sri Lankan, Bangledeshi, Nepali, Maldivian, Burmese and Bhutanese origin) women in Los Angles County. The project will work to achieve this goal by conducting culturally and linguistically appropriate community outreach and education to increase access and participation in clinical breast exams and mammogram screening services. Project: "HEALTH" Helping Empower African-Americans for Lifelong Total Health Working with other organizations that serve the uninsured, low income African American women of the Pasadena/Altadena area, a specifically trained health educator will provide breast health educational opportunities, outreach and empowerment. Three hundred (300) women will learn the importance of breast cancer self screening, mammograms, proper nutrition and physical activity, while facilitating access to 200 eligible, over age 40, women for breast screenings and mammograms. Project: Encore Plus Program Provide outreach and recruitment of 30,000 Armenian, Hispanic, Asian and South East Asian women for educational experiences that include instruction in breast self-exam, the principles and purposes of mammography and clinical breast exams; identification and navigation for referral sources of 1,800 at risk women for low or no-cost mammograms and clinical breast exams; and provision of interpretation services, transportation, child care and other assistance during screening. One hundred and ten (110) post breast cancer diagnosis women will be assisted with support group referral and continuing health education. Project: Improving Access to Breast Cancer Clinical Trials A team of health professional representing the targeted minorities, Chinese, Korean and Spanish speaking, will offer educational seminars on how to participate in breast cancer clinical trials at various senior and community centers. The teams will also seek to develop community partnerships with physicians and clinics serving these groups to establish a referral network to area clinical trials. Project: Each One Teach One (EOTO) Breast health Awareness Project The focus is placed on reaching 400-600 underserved African American women and other minority women of all ages with breast health awareness information, emphasizing the importance of early detection. Lay team leaders and assistants will use workplaces, churches, drug and alcohol recovery treatment programs, community human development organizations, and housing projects for educational venues. Project: Los Angeles County Breast health Resource Guide (7th Edition) Production and distribution of the 7th Edition of the Resource Guide which is a complication of breast cancer screening, diagnostic and treatment centers/services throughout Los Angeles County with emphasis on the underinsured/uninsured populations. Topics will include, but are not limited to, information and referral services for free and low cost breast examinations and mammograms, prosthesis programs, breast health outreach and education resources, insurance and legal resources, support services and counseling, and clinical trials. Project: Increasing Breast Cancer Awareness Among Young Women To reach approximately 250,000 young women and men with information about the importance of and techniques for self breast examination, healthy eating habits and an active lifestyle as breast cancer prevention strategies. Outreach is conducted at high schools and music and sporting events that attract young people.
